Moses, Man of the Mountain recounts the Book of Exodus of Moses from an African-American perspective, with critiques of male dominance and slavery added into the story. It received mixed reviews upon publication however its historical reputation has greatly improved over time, with many modern commentators seeing significance in Hurston's metaphors as viewed through the context of Adolf Hitler's rise to power during the time period of the book's initial release.
